IAU COMMISSION 27 UNPUBLISHED DATA FILE 318E Early F stars in the open cluster M 34 (NGC 1039) Submitted by: Kevin Krisciunas Department of Astronomy University of Washington Box 351580 Seattle, Washington 98195 USA email: kevin@astro.washington.edu The purpose of measuring these stars was to look for variable stars like gamma Doradus and 9 Aurigae, which are early F-type stars exhibiting variability up to 0.1 mag in V or B, on time scales of 0.5 to 3 days. The mechanism for variability seems to be non-radial gravity-mode pulsations. We selected stars from the list of Ianna and Schlemmer (1993, AJ, 105, 209). Our comparison star, check star, and 9 of our 11 program stars were observed photoelectrically by Johnson (1954, ApJ, 119, 185). We used UVa 123 (V = 10.46, B-V = 0.16) as our principal comparison star, and UVa 166 as a check star. We obtained only differential V-band photometry. The data were obtained on UT dates 19, 22, and 23 September 1996 using the University of Hawaii 0.6-m telescope at the summit of Mauna Kea and an Optec SSP-5 photometer belonging to the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Transformation to the UBV system was accomplished with observations of the red-blue pair BS 8451/8453. The differential extinction corrections were carried out, but usually amounted to only a few ten-thousandths of a magnitude. If we compute the expected differential magnitudes from the data of Johnson, we find a mean difference of +0.002 mag (in the sense our data minus Johnson's), with a standard deviation of the distribution of +/- 0.021 mag. The corresponding values for our data minus Ianna and Schlemmer (derived from photographic plates), are -0.062 and a sigma of +/- 0.082 mag. This is to say that the V magnitude adopted by Ianna and Schlemmer for UVa 123 is too bright by 0.062 mag for our data to match theirs on average. Their value for UVa is V = 10.41, whereas Johnson obtained 10.46. The latter must be the better value, given the differential data with respect to a dozen stars. The mean values of our data are given below. sigma is the standard deviation of the distribution, not the mean error of the mean.
