IAU COMMISSION 27 UNPUBLISHED DATA FILE No 121 6 pages, including cover sheet May, 1983 VRI + TIO-BAND OBSERVATIONS OF SIXTEEN RS CVn-TYPE BINARIES FOR 1980 Joel A. Eaton* Department of Physics and Astronomy Vanderbilt University Nashville, Tenn. 37235 USA Fifteen RS Canum Venaticorum-type and one BY Draconis-type binaries were observed at Kitt Peak National Observatory in October and early November 1980 by using the No 4, 16-inch telescope. The single channel photometer was equiped with an RCA C31034A photomultiplier tube and a special filter set designed to approximate the Cape VRI system (Cousins 1976a,b 1978; see also Bessel 1979) and to measure the stregth of the red TiO band near 7100A. The V and I bands were isolated by interference filters having central wawelegths and full width at half-maximum transmission of 5407A/620A and 8250A/710A, respectively. The R band was approximated by the sum of the signals for three bands, all about 100A wide, at 6962A, 7110A,and 7205A. The magnitude difference coresponding to the ratio of signals for the 6962A and 7110A bands was formed as a titanium oxide index, TiOx. The transformation to the standard Cape VRI system was determined from observations of standard stars taken from a list compiled by M. Bessel and kindly provided to me by J.V. Barnes. The observations from the four or five best nights gave the differential transformation: DV =Dv +0.032*D(v-i) D(V-R) = 0.763*D(v-r) D(V-I) = 0.987*D(v-i) +/- 0.005 +/-0.0011 +/-0.008 tars from the list of Wing (1978) were observed to determine the sensitivity of the TiOx color to changing band strength. The variable stars observed, comparison stars used, and the observed V magnitudes and colors of the comparisonstars are given in Table 1. Table 2-17 list the data. These numbers are nightly averages of typically two observations of the variable, each bracketed by observations of a comparison star. Each observation consisted of a series of 1-6 sec. integrations in sequence - (vir1r2r3r3r2r1iv), where the r's refer to the three bands near 7100A. The time of the midpoint of this sequence is quoted as the heliocentric Julian date.
