Abstract
This document describes the computer-readable version of the Catalogue of
UBV Photometry and MK Spectral Types in Open Clusters (Third edition)
(Mermilliod 1986a) distributed by the Astronomical Data Center, NASA Goddard
Space Flight Center. This catalog is a compilation of UBV photoelectric
photometry and MK classifications published prior to mid-1986 for stars in 295
open clusters. Listed for each of 16,433 stars are identifications,
cross-identifications, V, B-V, U-B, spectral type, remarks on various
peculiarities, and references.
The catalog is in five files. The first file contains the catalog data; the
second file lists references to the numbering of stars in each individual
cluster; the third file lists references to the photometry, sorted by journal;
the fourth file lists references to the spectral types, sorted by journal; and
the fifth file lists the references of the third and fourth files, sorted by
reference number and type. The present document describes the overall file
structure and the individual data fields.

1 Introduction
A copy of this document should be distributed with every copy of the
computer-readable catalog.
1.1 Description
The Catalogue of UBV Photometry and MK Spectral Types in Open Clusters
(Third edition) (UBVMK; Mermilliod 1986a) is a compilation of photoelectric UBV
photometry and MK spectral types published up to mid-1986 for 16,433 stars in
295 open clusters. It updates the 1976 edition (available on magnetic tape) and
contains nearly twice as much data as the earlier version.
The catalog is in five files: the first file contains the catalog data; the
second file lists references to the numbering systems for each cluster; the
third file lists the references for the UBV data, sorted by journal; the fourth
file lists references for the MK spectral types, sorted by journal; and the
fifth file lists the combined references of the third and fourth files, sorted
by reference number and type.

2 Structure
2.1 Each File as a Whole
The UBVMK consists of five files. Table 1 lists the machine-independent file
attributes. All records are of fixed length. The first file contains the
catalog data (Table 2); the second file lists the full forms of the references
to the individual cluster numbering systems (Table 3); the third file lists
references to the UBV photometry, sorted by journal; the fourth file lists
references to the MK spectral types, sorted by journal; and the fifth file
lists the combined references of the third and fourth files, sorted by
reference number and type (Table 4). Detailed descriptions of each file are
given in the following sections.
Quotations in any of the following descriptions come from Mermilliod (1986a)
unless otherwise noted.
2.2 Catalog (File 1 of 5)
This file lists the catalog data. In all cases, a blank field indicates no
data.

2.4 UBV References (File 3 of 5)
This file contains references to the UBV photometry, sorted by journal and
reference number. The numbers by which the references are cited in the first
file appear on the left and are followed by the volume number, page number, and
author(s). References from different journals are separated by a heading
containing the name of the journal. This file is formatted as 80 byte lines of
text which can be read and printed out with a FORTRAN A80 format.
2.5 MK References (File 4 of 5)
This file contains the references to the spectral types listed in the first
file. It is organized in the same manner as the third file (see Section 2.4).
The file is formatted as 80 byte lines of text which can be read and printed
out with a FORTRAN A80 format.
2.6 Sorted References (File 5 of 5)
This file contains the references of the third and fourth file, sorted by
reference number and type (photometry or spectral type). The photometry
references are listed first, followed by the spectral type references.
Number Code number by which this reference is cited in the appropriate
field of the catalog file [bytes 1-4, format I4]
Type Single character: "P" indicates that this is a photometry
reference; "S" indicates that this is a spectral type
reference. [byte 5, format A1]

3 History
3.1 Remarks and Modifications
The Catalogue of UBV Photometry and MK Spectral Types in Open Clusters
(Third edition) (UBVMK) was received by the Astronomical Data Center (ADC),
NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, from the Centre de Donnees Astronomiques,
Strasbourg (CDS), in December 1986.
The original tape consisted of five text files: the first file contained a
de- scription of the catalog files and has been incorporated into this
document; the second file contained the catalog data; the third file listed the
references to the cluster numbering systems; the fourth file listed the UBV
references; and the fifth file listed the spectral index references.
Several records in the data file were found to have one or more of the data
fields shifted by one byte to the right or left. These were corrected by means
of an editor. The cluster numbers in the numbering reference file were
reformatted slightly to match the format of the star identifications in the
data file. ADC personnel created the fifth file of sorted references by
reformatting and sorting the third and fourth files and combining them into a
single file.
A FORTRAN program was run to check the validity of each field according to
its data type and value. Three typographical errors were discovered and were
corrected by another FORTRAN program. A list of all changes made to the data
file is included in Appendix B: "Errata."

Appendix A Mermilliod Numbering System
The numbering system used to identify objects in this catalog is that
developed at Lausanne and described by Mermilliod (1978). This summary
description is taken directly from Mermilliod (1986b).
The code number is divided into three sections. The first digit indicates
the source catalog or type of cluster. The following numbers are used in this
catalog:
2 NGC
3 IC
4 Anonymous cluster
5 Anonymous cluster
The next four digits are the number of the cluster in the indicated catalog.
The following anonymous clusters appear:
40901 Blanco 1 (Zeta Scl)
431XX Stock's clusters
435XX Trumpler's clusters
51XXX Collinder's clusters
52XXX Melotte's clusters
"XX" and "XXX" represent the cluster number in the list of the cited author.
The last four digits represent the number of the star in the indicated
cluster. The references that define the numbering system for each cluster are
listed in the second file, sorted by catalog and cluster number.
