Astrophys., 458, 461-476 (2006)> =2006A&A...458..461K ================================================================================ ADC_Keywords: Associations, stellar ; Stars, pre-main sequence ; Infrared sources Keywords: stars: pre-main-sequence - binaries: visual - infrared: stars - surveys - techniques: high angular resolution Abstract: We report on a high-spatial-resolution survey for binary stars in the periphery of the Orion Nebula Cluster, at 5-15arcmin (0.65-2pc) from the cluster center. We observed 228 stars with adaptive optics systems, in order to find companions at separations of 0.13"-1.12" (60-500AU), and detected 13 new binaries. Combined with the results of Petr (1998, Ph.D. Thesis, University of Heidelberg), we have a sample of 275 objects, about half of which have masses from the literature and high probabilities to be cluster members. Description: The major part of the observations was carried out during three nights in December 2001 at the ESO 3.6m telescope on La Silla. In February 2002, eleven fields were observed in one half night at the Keck II telescope.
