ADC_Keywords: Novae ; Stars, luminous ; Stars, variable ; Photometry, UBVRI ; Photometry, SDSS Keywords: binaries: close - stars: winds, outflows - stars: massive - supernovae: general Abstract: We present extensive datasets for a class of intermediate-luminosity optical transients known as "luminous red novae" (LRNe). They show doublepeaked light curves, with an initial rapid luminosity rise to a blue peak (at -13 to -15mag), which is followed by a longer-duration red peak that sometimes is attenuated, resembling a plateau. The progenitors of three of them (NGC4490-2011OT1, M101-2015OT1, and SNhunt248), likely relatively massive blue to yellow stars, were also observed in a pre-eruptive stage when their luminosity was slowly increasing. Early spectra obtained during the first peak show a blue continuum with superposed prominent narrow Balmer lines, with P Cygni profiles. Lines of FeII are also clearly observed, mostly in emission. During the second peak, the spectral continuum becomes much redder, Hα is barely detected, and a forest of narrow metal lines is observed in absorption. Very late-time spectra (∼6 months after blue peak) show an extremely red spectral continuum, peaking in the infrared (IR) domain. Hα is detected in pure emission at such late phases, along with broad absorption bands due to molecular overtones (such as TiO, VO). We discuss a few alternative scenarios for LRNe. Although major instabilities of single massive stars cannot be definitely ruled out, we favour a common envelope ejection in a close binary system, with possibly a final coalescence of the two stars. The similarity between LRNe and the outburst observed a few months before the explosion of the Type IIn SN 2011ht is also discussed. Description: Photometry tables for six luminous red novae. The template has been constructed using good quality CSS images obtained in 2014 and 2015. The CRTS/CSS unfiltered magnitudes obtained from December 2004 have been reported to Johnson-Cousins V, while for images with the outburst detections, the colour correction suggested by Drake et al. (2013ApJ...763...32D 2013ApJ...763...32D) has been applied. Note on tablea3.dat: The g band observations are in the AB mag system, while Johnson-Cousins B, V, R, I data are Vega mag. The CRTS/CSS unfiltered data were then reported to Johnson-Cousins V through a colour correction reported in Drake et al. (2013ApJ...763...32D 2013ApJ...763...32D). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Byte-by-byte Description of file: objects.dat -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bytes Format Units Label Explanations -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1- 21 A21 --- Name Name 23- 24 I2 h RAh Simbad Hour of Right Ascension (J2000.0) 26- 27 I2 min RAm Simbad Minute of Right Ascension (J2000.0) 29- 33 F5.2 s RAs Simbad Second of Right Ascension (J2000.0) 35 A1 --- DE- Simbad Sign of the Declination (J2000.0) 36- 37 I2 deg DEd Simbad Degree of Declination (J2000.0) 39- 40 I2 arcmin DEm Simbad Arcminute of Declination (J2000.0) 42- 45 F4.1 arcsec DEs Simbad Arcsecond of Declination (J2000.0) 47- 53 A7 --- FileName Name of the table with photometry 55- 70 A16 --- OName Other name -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Byte-by-byte Description of file: tablea1.dat -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bytes Format Units Label Explanations -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1- 8 A8 "date" Date Date of observation (dd/mm/yy) 10- 17 F8.2 d JD Julian Date (JD-2400000) 19 A1 --- l_Umag Limit flag on Umag 20- 25 F6.3 mag Umag ?=- Johnson-Cousins U band magnitude (Vega) 27- 31 F5.3 mag e_Umag ?
