ADC_Keywords: Radio sources ; Interferometry Keywords: instrumentation: interferometers - techniques: interferometric - catalogues - surveys - astrometry - radio continuum: general Description: The catalogue contains compact radio sources with accurate positions observed with the Very Large Array (VLA). These sources are primarily intended for use as phase calibration sources for the Multi-Element Radio Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN); the sources are also suitable as phase calibrators for the VLA and can be considered as candidate phase calibrators for very long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) networks. The accuracy of the position is 12 mas for sources in Paper I, 14 mas for sources in Paper II, and 55 mas for sources in Paper III. File Summary:

Note (1): 1: Paper I, Patnaik et al., 1992MNRAS.254..655P, precision 12mas 2: Paper II, Browne et al., 1998MNRAS.293..257B, precision 14mas 3: Paper III, Wilkinson et al., 1998MNRAS.300..790W, precision 55mas Note (2): Correction to paper II. There are two errors of nomenclature viz: J2000 name for B0006+061 should be J0009+0628 not J0009+0638 J2000 name for B1901+155 should be J1904+1536 not J1904+1636 Note (3): Only for data of paper II and III Note (4): Only for data of paper I P: primary calibrator with >95% of their flux density contained in an unresolved component S: secondary calibrators up to 20% resolved on the longest baselines but with point-dominated structure D: double source *: 15-Jul-1997: Thanks are due to H. Andernach for communicating the errors he detected, and a corrected position (derived from Taylor et al's 1996ApJS..107...37T VLA observations) for the source B0256+424 Note (5): ext: extension; sec: secondary component; PA: position angle in degrees with separation in arcsec; res: resolved; sli: slightly; VLBI: quoted position is from the VLBI catalogues of Ma et al. (1990, Cat. I/151) and Russell et al. (1991AJ....101.2266R), with additional source positions provided by Dr J.L. Russell; image: map presented in this paper (see Figure A1 and Table A1 in Appendix A1) *: position derived from 1992 October observations hence rms uncertainty 0.010" in each coordinate. #: throw to calibrator >12d hence position error may exceed 0.100" (see text).

Andernach for communicating the errors he detected, and a corrected position (derived from Taylor et al's 1996ApJS..107...37T VLA observations) for the source B0256+424 * 11-Nov-1997: further errors reported by Browne et al. to H. Andernach to be published in "Interferometer phase calibration sources II" for B1705+456 and B1817+502 * 04-Jan-2000: the 3 catalogues were merged in a unique table.
