We study the spectral evolution of galaxies from z=1 down to the cluster redshift in a magnitude-limited sample at R≤23, for which the statistical properties of the sample are well understood. We divide emission-line galaxies into star-forming galaxies, Low Ionization Nuclear Emission line Regions (LINERs), and Seyferts by using emission-line ratios of [OII],Hβ, and [OIII], and derive stellar fractions from population synthesis models. We focus our analysis on absorption and low-ionization galaxies. Description: The observations (ESO program 078A-0456(A)) were obtained with the FORS2 instrument at the Cassegrain focus of the VLT UT1 telescope in multi-object spectroscopy mode with the exchangeable mask unit (MXU). They were acquired in service observing and were spread over the two periods, 78 and 80, to satisfy our observing requirements. File Summary:

Note (1): Galaxies with ID>1000 have z and V from Faure et al., 2007A&A...463..833F. Note (2): Galaxies with z only have their redshift measured from the lines identified visually in the last column. Galaxies with z and V are also measured by cross-correlation. Note (3): The velocity errors and Tonry parameters are products of the cross-correlation. Note (4): The rest frame wavelengths of the lines used are: AlIII = 1855-1863Å FeII24 = 2344.2Å, 2374.5Å, 2382.8Å FeII26 = 2586.5Å, 2600.2Å MgII = 2796.4Å, 2803Å AlII = 3584ÅOII 3728.2Å H10 = 3797.9Å H9 (+MgI) = 3835Å NeIII = 3869Å H8 = 3889.1Å K = 3933.7Å H (+Hε) = 3968.5Å Hδ = 4101.7Å G = 4303Å Hγ = 4340.5Å Fe43 = 4383Å Ca44 = 4455Å Fe45 = 4531Å Hβ = 4861.3Å OIII = 4958.9Å, 5006.8Å Mgb = 5175Å E = 5270Å NaD = 5892Å Hα = 6563Å NII = 6584Å
