J/MNRAS/312/557 K-band Luminosity Function of Field Galaxies (Loveday 2000)

The K-band Luminosity Function of Nearby Field Galaxies Loveday J. <Mon. Not. R. Astron. Soc. 312, 557 (2000)> =2000MNRAS.312..557L
ADC_Keywords: Galaxies, IR ; Photometry, infrared ; Surveys ; Redshifts Keywords: techniques: photometric surveys - galaxies: luminosity function, mass function - cosmology: observations Description: We present a measurement of the K-band luminosity function (LF) of field galaxies obtained from near-infrared imaging of a sample of 345 galaxies selected from the Stromlo-APM Redshift Survey. The LF is reasonably well fitted over the 10-mag range -26 < M(K-band) < -16 by a Schechter function with the parameters α=-1.16±0.19, M*=-23.58±0.42 and {phi*}=0.012±0.008 Mpc-3, assuming a Hubble constant of 100 km.s-1.Mpc-1. We have also estimated the LF for two subsets of galaxies subdivided by the equivalent width of the Hα emission line at EW(Hα)=1nm. There is no significant difference in LF shape between the two samples, although there is a hint (∼1σ significance) that emission-line galaxies (ELGs) have M* roughly 1 mag fainter than non-ELGs. Contrary to the optical LF, there is no difference in the faint end slope α between the two samples. File Summary:

Note on Name: Galaxy naming follows the same convention as the APM Bright Galaxy Catalogue (1996MNRAS.278.1025L) and the Stromlo-APM Redshift Survey (1996ApJS..107..201L). Note on Kmag: Obtained with the Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory (CTIO) 1.5 meter telescope using the CIRIM infrared array through the standard K filter over the nine nights 1996 August 31-September 4 and 1997 October 19-22. Note on fSExtr: SExtractor 2.0.1.5 software package developed by Bertin and Arnouts (1996A&AS..117..393B) used to detect and measure images. Note on Notes: 1 = Galaxy deblended by SExtractor; flux of components was summed. 2 = A "biggrid" observation: photometry may be less reliable than most galaxies. 3 = NGC1672: APM deblended this galaxy. 4 = Possibly non-photometric 5 = Central galaxy in close group of 3 6 = Double nucleus
