ADC_Keywords: Photometry, HST ; Redshifts ; Galaxy catalogs Keywords: galaxies: elliptical and lenticular, cD - galaxies: evolution - galaxies: stellar content Abstract: We explore the evolution of field early-type galaxies in a sample extracted from the ACS images of the southern GOODS field. The galaxies are selected by means of a nonparametric analysis, followed by visual inspection of the candidates with a concentrated surface brightness distribution. We furthermore exclude from the final sample those galaxies that are not consistent with an evolution into the Kormendy relation between surface brightness and size that is observed for z=0 ellipticals. The final set, which comprises 249 galaxies with a median redshift zm=0.71, represents a sample of early-type systems not selected with respect to color, with similar scaling relations as those of bona fide elliptical galaxies. Note (1): Three source identifications are not in the GOODS format: ID44.1118, ID33.1024, and ID44.1636. Note (2): The type corresponds to the spectral template that gives the best fit to the photometric redshift. Six templates are used, interpolating in 1/3 steps between them. Types 1 to 4 refer to E, Sbc, Scd and Im SEDs from Coleman, Wu & Weedman (1980ApJS...43..393C). Types 5 and 6 correspond to starburst SB2 and SB3 templates from Kinney et al. (1996ApJ...467...38K). Note (3): About the best linear fit to the color radial distribution). The scatter is obtained from the biweight measure of scale (Beers, Flynn & Gebhardt, 1990AJ....100...32B) which is much more robust with respect to the presence of outliers.
