ADC_Keywords: Stars, nearby ; Proper motions ; Photometry, infrared ; Spectroscopy Keywords: Galaxy: stellar content - solar neighborhood - stars: distances - stars: late-type Abstract: We have combined near-infrared data from the Two Micron All Sky Survey with ancillary optical data to identify previously unrecognized proper-motion stars that have colors and magnitudes consistent with nearby M dwarfs. We present follow-up observations of 392 stars from that sample, including ∼200 stars discussed here for the first time. Our distance estimates, based primarily on spectroscopic parallaxes, place 123 stars within 20pc of the Sun. One hundred and seventy-six stars exhibit Hα emission, and 82 stars have plausible X-ray counterparts from ROSAT observations. Description: We have collected spectroscopic observations of 415 of the 463 stars on our target list. Observations of stars in the Moving M sample were obtained in conjunction with follow-up spectroscopy of nearby-star candidates from the NLTT catalog (Papers I (J/AJ/123/2806), III (J/AJ/123/2828), VII (J/AJ/126/3007), and VIII (J/AJ/128/463)) and from our ultracool survey (Papers V (J/AJ/126/2421) and IX (J/AJ/133/439)). All observations were made using NOAO facilities, either the 1.5m telescope at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO) or the 2.1m at Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO). File Summary:

Note (3): The ROSAT hardness ratios are defined as HR=(H-S)/(H+S), where H and S are the source counts in, respectively, the hard and soft passbands. In the case of HR1, H covers 0.5-2.0keV and S spans 0.1-0.4keV; for HR2, the hard passband spans 0.9-2.0keV and the soft 0.5-0.9keV. Note (4): Flag on logX/bol as follows: ? = HR1>0.2. Global notes: Note (G1): Note as follows: * = star with a formal distance estimates within 1σ of 20pc. 1 = 2M1951-4025 has a resolved companion, ∼1 arcsecond separation, spectral type M4, ∼2.5 magnitudes fainter in the R band. 2 = 2M2049-2800 has CaH2/CaH3 band strengths suggestive of sub-solar metallicities; the absolute magnitude estimate has been adjusted accordingly.
