J/AJ/127/1117 Halpha emission-line stars in NGC2264 (Reipurth+, 2004)

Hα emission-line stars in molecular clouds. I. The NGC 2264 region. Reipurth B., Pettersson B., Armond T., Bally J., Vaz L.P.R. <Astron. J., 127, 1117-1130 (2004)> =2004AJ....127.1117R

We find 357 Hα emission-line stars, of which 113 were previously detected, within an area of 3°x3° centered on the Cone Nebula, with a majority of stars being concentrated in a dense cluster at the center of the region. We present a large-scale CO map of NGC 2264 and find a strong correlation between the cluster of Hα emission-line stars and the most massive core in the cloud complex. A more extended halo of stars poorly correlated with the gas may represent stars that have drifted away from their birth place, suggesting that star formation has taken place in NGC 2264 for several million years. Description: The spectral films were taken at the ESO 100/152cm Schmidt telescope at the European Southern Observatory at La Silla. The CCD images of NGC 2264 used here were obtained on 2000 January 10-12 at the 0.9m reflector located on Kitt Peak About 30,000 spectra of the 110GHz J=1->0 13CO line were obtained on a regular 1' grid between 1991 January and April with the AT&T Bell Laboratories 7m offset Cassegrain antenna located in Holmdel, New Jersey. Note (1): Newly discovered stars only. Note (2): LHa numbers 1-84 are defined in Herbig (1954ApJ...119..483H), and LkHa 360-370 in Marcy (1980AJ.....85..230M) Em* LkHA NNN in Simbad. Note (3): Defined in Ogura (1984PASJ...36..139O), except for 136, which is from Walsh et al. (1992MNRAS.257..110W). KHA NNN in Simbad Note (4): The positions are extracted from the 2MASS All-Sky Catalog (II/246) and are accurate to ∼0.1 arcsec. Note (5): The Hα strength is defined so that 1 is weak emission against a strong continuum and 5 is strong emission against a weak continuum. Emission-line strengths were estimated on each film separately and differences in estimates are indicated as hyphenated values, e.g., 3-4. Such differences were, with a few exceptions, not major and may represent either variability and/or uncertainty in the estimate.
