J/A+A/395/431 Line-strength indices for 148 early-type galaxies (Beuing+, 2002)

Line-strength indices and velocity dispersions for 148 early-type galaxies in different environments Beuing J., Bender R., Mendes de Oliveira C., Thomas D., Maraston C. <Astron. Astrophys. 395, 431 (2002)> =2002A&A...395..431B
ADC_Keywords: Galaxies, spectra ; Line Profiles ; Velocity dispersion Keywords: galaxies: elliptical - galaxies: abundances - galaxies: stellar content - galaxies: velocity dispersions Abstract: We have derived high quality line-strength indices and velocity dispersions for a sample of 148 early-type galaxies in different environments. The wavelength region covered by the observations (lambda∼4600 to 6600Å) includes the Lick/IDS indices Hbeta, Mg1, Mg2, Mgb, Fe5015, Fe5270, Fe5335, Fe5406, Fe5709, Fe5782, NaD, TiO1 and TiO2. The data are intended to address possible differences of the stellar populations of early-type galaxies in low- and high-density environments. This paper describes the sample properties, explains the data reduction and presents the complete list of all the measurements. Most galaxies of the sample (85%) had no previous measurements of any Lick/IDS indices and for 30% of the galaxies we present first-time determinations of their velocity dispersions. Special care is taken to identify galaxies with emission lines. We found that 62 per cent of the galaxies in the sample have emission lines, as measured by the equivalent width of the [0III]5007Å line, EW[OIII]~≳0.3Å. Description: In tables 5 and 6 we list the derived and accompanying properties of the sample galaxies and the line-strength indices for all galaxies, respectively. File Summary:

Note (1): Typical 1-sigma error on HRV is 20km/s. Note (2): Measured within 1/10 of the effective radius. Note (3): e_sigma0 is either the standard deviation from the mean value over the different template-stars or the mean FCQ error estimate, whichever is larger. The galaxies marked with an asterisk have central velocity dispersions below 100km/s. For these galaxies, the errors quoted are formal errors which may be systematically too small, given that the measurements are below the resolution of the data. Note (4): Emission type: 0: No emission visible in the spectra, or EW[OIII]<0.2 1: Possible/weak emission, 0.2<EW[OIII]<0.5 2: Strong emission, or EW[OIII]>0.5 Note (5): Galaxy types: ]-5.5, -4.5]: E ]-4.5, -3.5]: cD ]-3.5, -2.5]: E/S0 ]-2.5, -1.5]: S0 >-1.5: later than S0 Note (6): Source for BT0: dV91: de Vaucouleurs et al. For the galaxies of Run 1 (see col. 12) no value is given -- in these cases the galaxies were observed along the default east-west slit position.
