VII/147 Photometric Catalog of Northern Bright Galaxies (Kodaira+ 1992) ================================================================================ Photometric Catalog of Northern Bright Galaxies Kodaira K., Okamura S., Ichikawa S., Hamabe M., Watanabe M. ================================================================================ ADC_Keywords: Galaxy catalogs ; Magnitudes Description: This catalog presents homogeneous photometric parameters of 791 northern bright galaxies based on surface photometry. The observations were made with the 105 Schmidt telescope at Kiso Observatory in the photographic V band, mostly during 1984-1988. This catalog is the first machine-readable version of Part II of the "Photometric Atlas of Northern Bright Galaxies" (Kodaira et al. 1990). The fields in the catalog include galaxy name, position (B1950), morphological type, radial velocity, galactic V-band absorption, effective radius, apparent magnitude, and parameters of the ellipse fitted to the photometric galaxy image. Abstract : Galaxies are the most massive, luminous astronomical objects bound by self gravity and comprise the major fraction of luminous mass in the universe. Recent investigations of galaxies often require statistical analysis of a large body of observational data. High degree of homogeneity of the data is the key point to the success of such investigations. This catalog presents homogeneous photometric parameters of 791 northern bright galaxies on the basis of modern photographic surface photometry. Sample galaxies are taken from the Revised Shapley-Ames Catalog of Bright Galaxies (Sandage and Tammann 1981) and most of them are members of the Local Super-cluster. Observations were made with the 105cm Schmidt telescope at the Kiso Observatory, Institute of Astronomy, University of Tokyo, in the photographic V band (Kodak IIa-D emulsion combined with a Schott GG 495 filter) mostly during 1984-1988. Sample galaxies photographed on a total of 280 Schmidt plates were scanned with the PDS 2020 GMS microdensitometer at the Kiso Observatory during April-August 1988. Data reduction for standard surface photometry was carried out using a software library SPIRAL (Ichikawa et al. 1987; Okamura 1988) during July-September 1988. The intensive plate measurement and data reduction secure high homogeneity of the present data. This catalog is the first machine-readable version (Ver.1) of Part II (The Catalog) of the 'Photometric Atlas of Northern Bright Galaxies' (Kodaira et al. 1990), which also includes in Part III illustrative information such as images, isophotal maps, luminosity profiles, and ellipses fitted to the isophotes. Image data of sample galaxies can be obtained in FITS format magnetic tapes upon request, and it is planned to distribute them on CD-ROMs. We request that those errors in this catalog that are found by the user be transmitted to S. Ichikawa, National Astronomical Observatory, Mitaka, Tokyo 181 Japan (e-mail : richika@c1.mtk.nao.ac.jp) so that they can be corrected in future versions. (1990), separately from the main catalog. The true position angle can be computed as the sum of the ePA and fPA angles. Note (2): The type category of the template of the growth curve used in the derivation of the apparent total magnitude and the effective radius given in the preceding two columns. The type category is indicated only when the template of a different category from that to which the galaxy belongs was used. Note (3): Vmag25 is the magnitude in the V band integrated within the envelope ellipse, i.e., the ellipse fitted to the isophote of 25 mag/arcsec^2^ (see section 1.7 of Kodaira et al. 1990 for detail). Estimated internal accuracy is 0.10 mag. Note (4): c1 is the computed as the ratio of (a*b)^(1/2)^ of the ellipses that encircle 1/4 and 3/4 of the total luminosity, as explained in section 1.7 of Kodaira et al. (1990), and has an estimated internal accuracy of 0.01; c2 is computed as the ratio of (a*b)**(1/2) of the ellipses that encircles 1/2 and 3/4 of the total luminosity, and has an estimated internal accuracy of 0.03. A colon in u_c1 indicates that (a_1_*b_1_)^(1/2)^ is smaller than 15arcsec, where a_1_ and b_1_ are the semi-major and semi-minor axes of the ellipse that encircles 1/4 of the total luminosity; a colon in u_c2 indicates that (a_e_*b_e_)**(1/2) is smaller than 15 arcsec, where a_e_ and b_e_ are the semi-major and semi-minor axes of the effective ellipse. Note (5): The effective ellipse encircles half of the total luminosity; the estimated internal accuracy of mu is 0.19mag, and the estimated internal accuracy of Aeff is 0.04[arcsec]. A colon in u_mu shows values smaller than 19.5, and a colon in u_Aeff indicates a semi-major axis smaller than 15arcsec. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Byte-by-byte Description of file: notes.dat -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bytes Format Units Label Explanations -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1- 7 A7 --- Name The galaxy name taken from RSA. 8 A1 --- --- [:] 9- 72 A64 --- Text Text of note -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Acknowledgements: The generation of machine-readable files and the data validation are carried out by the Astronomical Data Analysis Center of the National Astronomical Observatory, Japan, under the collaboration with the authors.
